Relation between the Fatigue and Fracture Ductile-Brittle Transition in S500 Welded Steel Joints

چکیده

The formation and propagation of cracks occur through irreversible dislocation movements at notches, material defects, grain boundaries. Since this process is partly thermally controlled, the resistance to low temperatures increases. This slows both fatigue initiation crack propagation. From recent experimental data, it can be seen that growth accelerated below transition temperature (FTT) correlates with ductile-brittle (DBTT) found by well-known fracture mechanics tests, i.e., Charpy impact, toughness, CTOD. Hence, study investigates relation between FTT DBTT in S500 high-strength steel base welded joints using growth, toughness tests as well scanning electron microscopy. an almost constant decrease rate determined decreasing test even DBTT. At −100 °C, about half observed room for weld metal.

Effect of Constraint on Ductile Crack Growth and Ductile-Brittle Fracture Transition of a carbon Steel

Ductile-brittle fracture transition was investigated using compact tension (CT) specimens from -70 o C to 40 o C for a carbon steel. Large deformation finite element analysis has been carried out to simulate the stable crack growth in the compact tension (CT, a/W=0.6), three point-point bend (SE(B), a/W=0.1) and centre-cracked tension (M(T), a/W=0.5) specimens. Experimental crack tip opening di...

Engineering ductile fracture in brittle-matrix composites

This letter describes a newly discovered phenomenon: ductile fracture in cementitious materials. The brittle nature of materials such as concrete and ceramics has prompted the development of various approaches to enhance their fracture toughness. Fibre reinforcement has been the common focus in the toughening of the brittle materials. Two types of fracture have been observed to date in cementit...

Relation between Residual Stress and Fatigue Strength for Electron Beam Welded Joints of Sheet Metal

Residual stresses in welds significantly affect the fatigue strength and stress corrosion crack resistance of the weld joint, and therefore, numerous studies have been made about the effects. The residual stress induced by electron beam welding (EBW) has also been researched in various approaches, but many of the study reports dealt with thick plates (50 mm or thicker) only.1–5) This was becaus...

Numerical Modeling of the Ductile-Brittle Transition

Numerical studies of the ductile-brittle transition are described that are based on incorporating physically based models of the competing fracture mechanisms into the material's constitutive relation. An elastic-viscoplastic constitutive relation for a porous plastic solid is used to model ductile fracture by the nucleation and subsequent growth of voids to coalescence. Cleavage is modeled in ...
